Why does my ringer volume go down after a few seconds

If you have one of the newer iPhones with Face ID, that is a feature of Face ID. Go to Settings>Face ID & Passcode, scroll down to Attention Aware Features, you can turn it off. The iPhone recognizes that you have looked at it and will lower the volume of the ringer to prevent disturbing others.
