USB-C Hub not working w/ new MacBook Pro

Newly purchased (NYT recommended) VAVA hub not working w/ new MacBook Pro -- either when I attempt to connect an (also new) Apple SuperDrive or Logitech mouse receiver. Get error message about power. Have tried routing the MAC power adapter through the VAVA and then into the Mac. Still nothing. What am I missing here? Thanks!

Unless the new Super Drive behaves differently than older models, the Super Drive cannot connected to a USB hub. You may need to connect the Super Drive directly to the laptop or using just a USB-C to USB-A Adapter (a multi-port adapter may work too).

I've found plugging the charging cable into an adapter doesn't always provide enough power to the laptop (even with the Apple dongles) or at least it isn't always properly recognized. Also dongles/adapters have a specially marked USB-C connector for passing power through to the laptop. Peripherals connected to a dongle/adapter may not receive power from the charger which is plugged into the same dongle/adapter so check with the manufacturer of those dongles/adapters (some dongles/adapters will charge those devices).

I'm not familiar with the hub you mention, but to add other peripherals to the laptop you may need to use a powered USB3 hub so those devices have enough power to operate.

Hello, RBS1955.

I understand that you are having a power issue with a third-party USB-C hub. I’m glad to help.

I first wanted to ask if peripherals are working as expected when plugged directly into your MacBook Pro. Knowing this will help us isolate from where the error is coming. Also, are you getting this error when the Mac is plugged into power?

Resetting the System Management Control (SMC) of your MacBook Pro would be the first direct troubleshooting step I would recommend. As noted in the article, please be sure to unplug all of your peripherals before resetting the SMC. Restarting the Mac is always a significant troubleshooting step to start off with, but in this case, resetting the SMC accomplishes that as well. We have a real two birds with one stone type situation here.

How to reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac

You mentioned that you were getting a power error message. Please see if the error message is covered in this article:

If a Mac accessory needs more power or is using too much power

I hope this helps.

Best Regards.
