Encryption paused, can't resume, cancel or mount disk

I recently attempted to encrypt an external APFS volume (not a boot disk), but encryption was interrupted by a reboot. On restart:

  • diskutil apfs list shows "Encryption Progress:  43.0% (Paused) (Locked)"
  • I can unlock the volume with diskutil apfs unlockVolume
  • diskutil apfs list now shows "Encryption Progress:  43.0% (Paused) (Unlocked)"
  • fsck_apfs shows the volume "appears to be OK" ...
  • But the volume can't be mounted.
  • diskutil mount shows "Volume on disk... failed to mount"

So, I'm stuck. Encryption is paused, and there seems to be no way to resume or cancel. Although the disk is unlocked and shows no errors, it can't be mounted. Others have reported similar problems, and I've tried all the fixes I've seen recommended in this forum and elsewhere: Rebooting, unplugging power, unplugging the USB cable connecting a UPS, moving the external disk to another Mac -- none of these help.

Thanks in advance for any other suggestions!

Try running Disk Utility First Aid. If First Aid is unable to repair the volume, then you will need to erase the drive since there are no third party utilities to repair an APFS volume since Apple has not released the necessary documentation.

APFS is a new file system which still has some bugs and is not recommended for external drives. You should format the external drive with MacOS Extended (Journaled) instead.

Thanks, Joseph. The page you linked to gives instructions for repairing a disk using Disk Utility, which I've already tried. fsck_apfs reports that the volume "appears to be OK". Since no errors are found, the utility doesn't try to fix anything when invoked as "fsck_apfs -y -x". However, encryption doesn't resume, and the volume still can't be mounted.

Was there anything else on the linked page that I missed?

Thanks, HWTech. As I explained in my reply to Joseph, I've already tried Disk Utility First Aid, as well as running fsck_apfs from the command line. No errors are found, and there is nothing to repair. You are correct that this volume probably shouldn't have been APFS -- put that down to operator error. I will reformat as HFS+ if necessary. The volume wasn't backed up, but that's because there's nothing important on it that I can't reconstruct with a few hours work. However, I'd rather spend those few hours understanding the problem, if that's possible. I'm still puzzled why a volume that passes fsck_apfs with no errors can't be mounted, and why encryption doesn't resume.
