EMAILS READ ON IPHONE MARKED AS READ ON ALL OTHER DEVICES - HOW TO STOP AUTOMATIC MARKING READ ON OTHER DEVICES

Does anyone know how to stop emails being marked as read on all devices if you read it on one device such as your iPhone. I do not want the emails to be marked as read on my other devices because it is very easy to miss important emails that need a reply on a computer

iPhone XS, iOS 13

keeping mails in sync both in terms of read and deleting on all clients

is the purpose of the newer email protocols such as IMAP and Exchange

if your mail provider has the old pop3 protocol support you can switch to that

You may not like it but this is a feature of IMAP, not a bug. Usually it is exactly how I want my email to work but on occasion I'll get an email that I can't or don't want to deal with immediately on my phone or iPad. My solution is to forward them to myself. Seeing them forwarded on my iOS device I know not to open them so when I get to a computer I see mail waiting to be read.

The only way to do this is to use a POP account, and also so to set each device not to delete messages from the server when they are downloaded (deleting them is usually the default), either never or after a specified period. (In Apple Mail, menu Preferences>Accounts, and select the Mailbox Behaviours tab (latest version mauy be slightly different).

You are evidently using an IMAP account and since the messages reside on the server (like webmail) it's in it's nature to behave in the way you descibe and don't like.

Not every service of those which offer an IMAP offers a POP version - iCloud doesn't - so if you're using a service other than iCloud you will have to approach them and ask, and if you're using iCloud you'll have to decide whether to find another service.
