Migration Mac to Mac over WiFi

How long does it typically take
How long depends on the amount of data your transferring, the short answer is too long. Don’t do it over wi-fi, it's too slow and is prone to errors. Get the appropriate cable/adapters and use ethernet, or make and use a Time Machine backup.

Migration of WiFi at this time is not recommended - it is too slow and usually stalls if you attempt to migrate more than a couple GB of data. Since everyone needs at least one backup (preferably more) you should have an external drive with either a clone of the internal drive (I like CarbonCopyCloner and SuperDuper! for cloning) or a TimeMachine backup. A good USB 3 external drive will do the job in a few hours (of course that depends on how much you are migrating).
To be honest, you should NEVER use Wi-Fi to migrate! It can take weeks (no I am not kidding) and it will fail 100% of the time. The quickest and most reliable method is to connect the old Mac's Time Machine or bootable clone EHD via USB cable to the new Mac and then launch Migration Assistant on the new Mac. This works 100% of the time.
