Returning lost airpods

I found a set of 1st generation AirPods.

What can I do to get them back to the owner? Am I right in saying Find My only works with AirPods if they are connected to the users registered device?

Can Apple use the serial number to identify which account is connected to these and return them that way?

  1. Find My [Device] works for the owner of the device if the device is added to the Find My app. In this instant, the AirPods cannot connect to Wi+Fi so the owner is only able to see the device's last known location.
  2. The answer to your second question is NO. Apple will not get involved in tracking via serial number.

Not sure what you can do at this point to back them back to the original owner.
