I can't find a way to make a quarter note triplet with an eighth note triplet over the space of 1 beat look right . It ends up with an eighth note triplet tied to an eighth triplet followed by an eighth note triplet.

There are many ways to do this.... here is one simple way....
1/ add an eighth note then add drag the n-tuplet object from the part box over top.
you will get a triplet consisting of an eight note and two rests.
2/ elongate the first eight note ( use duration bars or key command).
3/ add last eighth note triplet.
same instructions as before except double click on the the tuples and make sure allow double values is checked....
Hi, Here is a screen shot of what I don't want. I'm only talking about the first beat of the bar. The first beat of the bar should NOT be 2 eighth note triplets tied together followed by the eighth triplet. It should be quarter note-eighth note inside of the triplet bracket. Post a pic of what you want as the end result and I will show you - having a hard Time understanding what you want . A quarter note triplet by default is over one beat so having that plus eight note triplets all over one one wouldn’t make rhythmic sense - unless I misunderstand which is why a pic would make it clear
