USB connected drive and Macbook Air

I have just bought a Macbook Air and want to connect an external drive (full of data) previouslu used with my Windows computer to it to transfer files. The drive has a USB connector - can I just plug it in (using an adapter) and expect it to work OK?

If it is formatted as NTFS (Windows standard) you will be able to read from the drive, but you will not be able to write to it.

In order to write to it, you will need 3rd party software, you you will have to re-format the drive (which will erase all data on the drive) using your Mac.
