The right to downgrade IOS from 4 to 3.1.3 should be returned!
I am using Ipod Touch 3rd Generation. I have had a great battery issue since I upgraded to IOS 4. By searching for solutions for days, I believe many Ipod Touch users are suffering the same problem. Although there is no official explanation, most people think this is the result of the new strategy of WiFi access and the notification. Maybe it is necessary for iPhone 4 to achieve some "fabulous" jobs. But Apple shouldn't only take the future income into consideration. Since we paid for our Apple products, the update with good features should be included and Apple should care about us previous users. If Apple is so occupied by attracting new customers, it should give users the right to choose a better solution.
I strongly claim the right of choosing IOS versions. If you also want the right to select your favorite IOS versions, please support this post and let more and more people see it. We hope this concern could be noticed by Apple, which is probably busy with the antenna issue in IPhone 4.
I've done that. Do you think it helps? I doubt that because there are still so many fresh posts talking about this issue in so many forums including this one.
I strongly support your statement. So far I wrote to the feedback address, visited an Apple store, and called into support. Basically it's a wall of silence. I was even in live contact with a journalist at the press conference last week and pleaded that he ask about iPod issues. Too bad he never got to ask a question.
I am having the same problems....I would love to see Apple correct this....because I am waiting for the Verizon deal to go through one day. My whole house owns Ipods of every size and shape....I even bought a Mac thinking that they support their products.....Come on Apple....get with it before you release garbage....I want my old IOS software back!!!
I agree... My iPod Touch (2nd Gen) worked great! Now that I've updated to OS4, I cannot play podcasts (it unexpectedly closes to home screen when I hit certain podcasts, but plays others fine). I didn't have this issue before, and would love to go back to a previous OS.

You have never been able to downgrade.
Actually, the Shift/Opt-Restore method was a legitimate way to downgrade firmware and worked just fine until 3.0 was released. I've done that with other iPods and even on my 1st and 2nd gen Touches with 2.x releases. But since 3.0 was released you have to resort to putting the device into DFU mode before you Shift/Opt-Restore, which does work as I've stepped from iOS 4 down to 2.2.1, which was the last version that worked properly with my car stereo.
This method works with old version of iPod touch, but not with the 3rd generation. To my knowledge, the downgrade has been blocked by refusing to generate a core file, which contains the information of ipod booting and other system behaviors, when iTune is trying to get this file from Apple during the shift+restore. This file is iOS-based, meaning it could be different for different version of iOS. If you have the backup of that file, you can easily rollback to any corresponding previous version.
I've been having the same problem with the WiFi eating the battery. Until Apple decides to fix the bug the option that I'm working with is to leave Settings open in my quick switch and to put my iTouch into "Airplane Mode" whenever I'm done using the WiFi. While rather inconvenient it seems to have worked to give me back the standby time I had with version 3.
Rather sad Apple is making people resort to kludge methods for fixing THEIR buggy product releases.

I can't say for sure, but it may be possible with a 3rd gen Touch if you use a different computer for the process. I say that because I had been trying to go from 3.1.3 back to 2.2.1 on my 2nd gen Touch but was never able to. I chalked that up to something Apple did to block it. After the iOS 4 disappointment, I thought I'd try again but on another computer (with a different iTunes library). This time it worked without a hitch, so using a different computer might be the key (I seem to recall other success stories related to using a diffent computer to restore iPhone issues).
I've searched for couple of days. It seems that for recent versions of ipod touches (typically 3rd generation originally installed 3.1.2/3.1.3 OS), if you don't have the .shsh file, which is what i mentioned in the last post, it is impossible to do a downgrade.
