Siri is draining my battery

Why is Siri draining my battery. It happens even when Siri is turned off in settings. My phone can have a 100% charge before going to bed and the phone is dead in the morning.

Yesterday I reset my phone and now Siri is no longer a battery hog. Go to Settings and tap General > Reset >Reset All Settings. You will keep your data, emails etc but will have to re-setup things like apple pay, locations services and synching iMessage to our Mac or iPad.

I have been fighting this for weeks. My battery would go dead in the course of the day without unusual use. If I didn’t leave it on the charger at night it would be dead in the morning.

siri was the highest % use by app, followed by Mail and Contacts, but showed no minutes of use in activity by app. I turned off Siri in every place I could find. That did not help.

In Settings/Passwords & Accounts/ I had three accounts feeding Mail; iCloud, IGoogle and Yahoo. Selecting iCloud/iCloud from there, I turned off everything. Battery drain went back to normal.

I went back to Settings/Passwords & Accounts/iCloud/iCloud and turned on Mail and Contacts only. Battery drain spiked again.

I turned off Mail. Battery drain continued.

I turned Mail back on and Contacts off. Battery drain continued.

I turned everything but Contacts and Mail on. Battery drain was normal.

did not charge overnight, battery was still at 81% (was not 100% last nigh)

the email accounts i use are still here. You can choose to copy your iCloud accounts to the phone when you shut Contacts off in iCloud.

I was having the very same problem with terrible battery drain on my XS Max that started a few weeks ago. The battery would go from 100% to 50% in just four hours or so. Oddly enough, my apple watch S5 starting behaving the same way and would be nearly dead after about 10 hours. When I would check the phone battery in settings, it was showing Siri and Contacts being responsible for most of the usage. Siri was usually around 55-60% and contacts was usually around 35-40%. I tried everything to include turning off Siri and resets but nothing helped. Finally, I signed out of my iCloud account on my phone, watch and iPad Pro. I turned them all off for a few minutes and restarted them and logged back into my iCloud account on all of them. Now everything is working perfectly and I have great battery life back on all devices with all of the Siri and iCloud settings turned on. I am just assuming but I think there was a conflict with the iCloud settings between my devices which caused them to get caught in a never ending syncing loop which exhausted the batteries. Anyway, its fixed now, everything is working fine and a regular check of my battery shows Siri consuming the standard 1% if any at all and contacts does not show anything unless I actually open the app. Hope this helps.

I was having the same problem with my iPhone Xr. Call support about your problem with Contacts. When they fixed the contacts I got my battery back. I had to speak with a 2nd tier support person to get it fixed. It's not the battery. My phone would take 30-45 seconds to look up a contact and then to call. My contacts were also not synching between devices. Once they fixed the problems with Contacts my battery went back to normal. This week it lasted 2 full days on one charge with 45% still left on the battery. It runs down quicker when away from home and not on wifi but still lasts all day where before it was 4-5 hours.

Thank you for posting this. I was having all of these same problems for about 3-4 weeks. After reading your post, I remembered turning on Google contacts sync around that same time. My contacts were always freezing, Siri was draining my battery and mail background was also. I turned off Google Contacts and the ICloud sync for contacts. I also turned off Siri under the contacts settings and my phone is back to normal! I can’t believe it. I was so frustrated thes last few weeks! I’m thinking about turning Siri back on today to test it but it still makes me nervous. Thanks again!

Turning off iCloud CONTACT sync and then back on again worked for me. Had spent 4 weeks with horrendous battery drain on iPhone 11 Pro.

Thankfully I worked it out for myself, because the best Apple Support could do was tell me to wait for an iOS update or reset to factory settings and see up iPhone as new without a back up!

Hello to all..

After going through a few replies, it was quite evident that this is a software issue. Turning off siri on the iPhone & the Apple Watch was of no use & still kept draining the battery. Particularly involving iCloud & the mail app.

Temporary resolution: I have signed out of iCloud account & mail app yesterday. After re starting my phone, immediately there is a noticeable increase in battery backup. Currently have not signed back into iCloud or mail app. This is working for me as of now. Also, I have re enabled siri and battery is still good. Siri is taking up about 1 to 2% of battery life, which is a drastic reduction from 60 - 80%

Will keep you guys updated by signing in to the mail & iCloud one by one & keeping a watch on battery life.

I have the same problems as most of you here as per my previous posts here. I followed the advise of MohamedAmir and others, I went to Settings, clicked on my name, then on iCloud and turned Contacts off. That's all i did so far. I now have the full use of the battery. Previously, while 100% before going to bed, and waking to a dead phone or only a few percent left, and now, from 100% to 98% in the morning, and lasts me a full day with average use. Siri usage is now down to 1 - 7%.

Unfortunately for me, turning off iCloud for contacts is not ideal as I need to back up my contacts to iCloud as I use them on Outlook in my computer for work.

Furthermore, this did improve my use of the contacts app, but very slightly. It still very buggy, freezes most of the time, but at least do not wake to a dead phone if not on the charger all night. What is ironic, is that apple support was very quick to blame the battery and insisted that it was not a software, but an hardware issue, and I needed to buy a new battery.

There is still something that I need to do to ensure the contacts app starts working properly again, and it clearly proves that a bug got introduced to my phone through iCloud and needs to be fixed.

Will try a few more options and let you know if any improvements.

I took both my phone and iPad to the Apple store after talking to tech support several times. They fixed all of the issues I'd been having by doing a hard restore (wiping both the phone and iPad completely). We had tried this before but this time did not restore via iCloud backup or any other means. I am gradually adding back one app at a time. The said it is definitely not a battery problem (which I knew) but weren't able to say what specifically what software or app caused the problem. Tech support by phone was no help so for those of you still having the issues, I recommend an appointment at the Apple store. Both devices are like new again. I am now back to charging my phone every other day and the iPad lasts all day or longer even with hours of use. I can also use Siri again. The other tip you could try if you're lazy like me and had turned off secure sign on, is to not do that. I now use the facial recognition for the phone and touch ID or my passcode for the iPad. To summarize, after having Siri suck battery life, then mail background activity, then contacts, and syncing issues - both my iPhone X and 7th generation iPad are working like they should and it's wonderful. Good luck everyone. There is something going on but Apple doesn't seem to know exactly what it is - hopefully they'll figure it out and fix it for everyone soon. I spent hours and hours trying to fix it myself, on the phone or chat with tech support and almost an hour at the Apple Store. I was close to switching to an Android but not now. Back to being a happy user (for now).

If you are logged into your MacBook using your Apple ID, it certainly sounds like it would be the same issue. When I wiped my iPhone X clean and restored it without data and apps, it solved the issue. My iPhone X was doing the same as you listed above. It was getting very hot, battery draining very quickly, Siri, mail and contacts were draining the battery even though I wasn’t using them. It’s still happening on my iPhone SE, but I haven’t wiped it yet. Trying to make sure I have everything restored on my iPhone X before I clear and restore my iPhone SE. Another glitch was the contacts were getting stuck. I would open contacts but then the phone would not respond

if you are able to log out and wipe your device and restore without data and apps, I would recommend that. I didn’t lose my data and it did bring back over my Contacts, Photos, Messages, male, voice memos, and everything that I had backed up to the cloud.

just be sure you have everything turned on in your iCloud settings for back up and you have a very recent back up. I was worried about restoring without data but I did get my data back.

I have to go in and re-download each app and log back in. I didn’t have my keychain turned on so I lost all my passwords. I’m making sure I have all of those in my iCloud keychain and backed up before I white the SE

I hope this helps! Good luck!

I have now confirmed that its iClouds which is causing Siri to drain battery. As per my previous post, I had removed all my email accounts from the stock email app & signed out of iClouds to get back battery life. This really helped as I saw immediate results within a couple of hours.

Two days pass & I decided to log into all my email accounts on the stock email app. Battery life still good.

Today I logged back into my iClouds, and behold. Within 15-20 minutes I could feel the phone heat up & battery drain. I presumed this to be the sync and left it for a couple of hours. After sync completion, the same siri taking up battery began to pop under the battery settings. I turned off Siri from within the iCloud App. This temporarily relieved battery life for about 5-6 hours. Again, during regular course of use, Siri has popped up & taken up close to 35% of battery life, which is still significantly high.

So eventually, even I have determined that there is something going haywire with iClouds & Siri when signed in.

When signed out, with Siri & hey siri turned on, siri shows up under 1% in the battery section, which is close to nothing.

Today im going to turn off iClouds again & check for the confirmation of the issue being with iClouds.
