Siri is draining my battery

Why is Siri draining my battery. It happens even when Siri is turned off in settings. My phone can have a 100% charge before going to bed and the phone is dead in the morning.

Yesterday I reset my phone and now Siri is no longer a battery hog. Go to Settings and tap General > Reset >Reset All Settings. You will keep your data, emails etc but will have to re-setup things like apple pay, locations services and synching iMessage to our Mac or iPad.

You might try changing how often Mail checks your accounts for new messages. I changed my phone to check every 30 minutes and now my phone is lasting from 7am to 10 pm while working from home. I also did the phone reset. I'm still having issues with the contacts portion having a long delay (about 30 seconds when I look up a name).

To change how often the mail app checks for new messages:

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Go to Passwords & Accounts.
  3. Tap Fetch New Data.
  4. Turn off the Push toggle switch.
  5. Tap each email account that uses push (the account will show Push instead of Fetch).
  6. Select Fetch from the next screen so that the fetch settings are applied to that account.
  7. Tap the arrow at the top to return to the previous screen.
  8. Scroll to the bottom and choose a fetch schedule. Options include Automatically, Manually, Hourly, Every 30 Minutes, and Every 15 Minutes.

Someone else told me about the gmail issue, so I have had turned off on my phone for months. I have now gone through all the Siri reporting which seems to show every app you have ever had on an iPhone over the last 13 years, present or not on current phone. It has taken me close to 30 minutes to go through and turn them off on each app. I have also turned off Siri in widgets. It's not "Kill Bill", hopefully it's "Kill Siri"

I solved the Siri problem by doing a hard restore from iTunes and shutting Siri off completely (second time doing a hard restore). However, now Mail Background Activity is eating my battery. This is ridiculous. I have had to change all settings to manual fetch for email and the battery still drains far faster than it should but at least lasts more than four hours. Really hope Apple is working on this. By the number of people complaining about the same problems, it definitely isn't going to be solved by replacing the battery in my new iPhone, which is what Apple Tech Support told me to do despite the fact diagnostics showed the battery is just fine. My new iPad also still drains at a ridiculous rate. I have to power it right off between uses rather than just closing the cover. I am one frustrated Apple customer.

I contacted Apple support regarding my issues with the long delay in trying to look up contacts (30-45 seconds) and that my contacts were not synching with my Mac. The initial support person couldn't help but the 2nd tier person went through my phone and Mac and fixed issues with the iCloud synch. She said there was an issue regarding google mail that was causing problems for a lot of people. I have an account but don't use it. She accessed my phone online and walked me through steps to fix iCloud synch. Now that the synch issues arre fixed, I'm no longer having issues with battery life. Siri is on and working and my battery is lasting all day. Last night my battery was at 74% at 11pm after being off the charger since 8:30am. I wish I could tell you what she did to fix my problem but there were too many steps. If you talk to support, call from a land line so you can stay on the call as they access your phone and walk you through fixing your phone remotely.

I did a complete reset and turned off "hey Siri". My phone will usually make it a full day now, but it is not a true test because I am now working from home and using wifi vs cellular. Hopefully Apple gets this fixed before we are allowed to go back to work. I've been an Apple fan for a while and switched from Windows and Adroid because Apple just worked and had less issues. For the last couple of years, that has not been the case. If Apple is going to continue offering products at a premium price, the quality and service needs to be at a higher level.

I went to Apple.com, clicked on support, then iPhone. Scroll to the bottom where it says Tell us how we can help and click Get support. Fill out the section that asks What's happening with your iPhone and connect by phone. I was able to leave my number and they called me back. I allowed them to share my phone screen and the support person would display a red arrow next to where I needed to press with my finger. We looked at several areas on my phone and also on my Mac. Several items were not appearing in my iCloud synch that should have been there. I had multiple issues, items not syncing, long delay with the contacts app and battery life. We looked at so many different areas I couldn't keep track but am happy to say that everything appears to be working and the battery now lasts all day with more to spare.

They must be aware judging by the number of people reporting the problem. Also, when I talked to support a few days ago, they didn't even do a battery diagnostic, just told me to call the Tech Dept. When I spoke to the Tech Dept. the battery diagnostic showed the battery was fine, as it should be on a phone that's only a couple of months old. Their solution was to bring both my iPhone and iPad to an Apple Store to have the batteries replaced. This is NOT a battery issue. I did a hard restore from iTunes on my phone and it went from Siri draining the battery (while shut off completely) to Mail Background Activity doing the same thing. I changed all mail settings to "manual" and it's a bit better but nowhere near what a battery performance should be on a relatively new iPhone and a brand new iPad.

The Apple updates did nothing to stop Siri from using up my battery. I contacted Apple support regarding my iPhone contacts not syching with my Mac and the phone screen freezing while using contacts. Once we fixed that, Siri quit draining my battery. The tech support person told me that there was some issue with Google mail that was doing something to wear down the battery on some people's phones. I don't know if it does something in the background or not but my battery issue has been fixed. Before when looking at settings, Siri and mail were the biggest drains. Not any longer.

I tried turning off all of Siri. It didn't work. The phone screen would freeze when looking up a contact. I finally gave up on trying to fix it myself and contacted Apple support online. I gave them my landline number and they called me back and I shared my screen. They spent probably spent 20-30 minutes on the phone with me walking me through a lot of settings changes. I wish I had contacted them in the first place. Would have saved a lot of time. Now my battery lasts longer than a day with Siri on (including Hey Siri). My phone has been on today since 7:30 am and my battery is at 89% and Siri has only drained it 2%. Before talking with Apple support my phone would be around 50% by mid-day while working at home on wifi and Siri would been the biggest drain followed by mail. There was no charge for the support.
