GPU not found - Mac Pro (2013)

Hi, I hope someone can guide me to a better diagnosis for this Mac. Hopefully it is not a failing gpu...

For the past couple of months, I've been having more constant instances of this Mac Pro failing to boot up properly.

It starts up, power led is on, fan appears to be spinning, but there is no video output. I can use another Mac to ssh into it, so I know that it is booting into macOS. (When this happens it can restart itself a few times before it becomes stable again, - no video though)

  • Have tried removing all USB devices except for keyboard
  • Have tried with different monitors (HDMI and DisplayPort)
  • Reinstalled OS one month ago and issues continue
  • Apple Diagnostic Tool shows no issues.
  • PRAM and SMC resets appear to help a bit although it is not 100%; sometimes after these resets, I get video output back.

Kernel panics show :

panic(cpu 0 caller 0xffffff7f838fd75a): "virtual bool AMD7000Controller::detectPowerDown(): GPU is not found. PCI config access fails!!!

Or it can panic due to watchdog timeout:

"panic(cpu 2 caller 0xffffff7f8b23fad5): userspace watchdog timeout: no successful checkins from com.apple.WindowServer in 120 seconds

I will try that.

I have noticed that when I leave it on for some time, shut it down (by long-pressing the power button) and turning it back on, it will show video output again (Not sure if that would work 100% of the time).

.. I keep fearing that it might be something similar to the xbox 360's red ring of death soldering issues, where it could be temporarily fixed by wrapping it in a towel, making it heat up for a while and it would work fine for a few days ..

No, the regular AHTs I found are not very good at finding errors... Dead HDD... just skips the test with no notice, RAM problems not likely to be found, OSX presses the RAM harder than any RAM tester, so on & so forth.

The not available to the public ASDs did a bit better, but they quit those when the MP 2013s came out... no idea how the new download ones do, but if I were a conspiracy theorist...

Thanks.

Oh, that is odd.. I know it is an old computer, but I hoped it would last longer than this.

I'll have to go to an Apple store to see what the solution to this might be..

Just wondering, do you know how much it costs (at apple or authorized specialist) to replace the pair of D300 GPUs? I've gone through eBay but the prices are just insane (~$1,350 for both cards).
