Bluetooth - it appears to be constantly searching

I have a problem with Bluetooth. It occurs on my iPad and iPhone. When I go to Bluetooth in Settings it is constantly searching. Can I stop this to reduce battery use or does it stop automatically once I come out of settings? I cannot turn Bluetooth off as I need to remain paired with the Pencil and watch respectively.

Advice would be appreciated. Thanks!
