I had some vertical videos mixed with horizontal photos and made the movie horizontal. I'm ok with black bars appearing on the sides in portions of the video, but when I saved the video it play back as a horizontal movie but in a vertical format with black bars top and bottom. How do fix that?

If the inspector shows you something like this (a vertical video, note it says 1080 x 1920 and not the other way around):
Click the Modify button and fix the dimensions of the project:
If you let the spatial conform for most clips at the default ("Fit"), you should not need to do much more. Just go through the project and check if it is all ok.

What are the dimensions of your project? If you created the project using automatic settings it will have been set according to the first clip added to it.
If in doubt: select the project in the browser and open the inspector. Post a screenshot.
That is NOT the project, that is info for a clip. This particular clip is horizontal.

I don't see a place to Modify the that setting.
