Safari cutting off video sound every 5 minutes

While watching a news video in Safari that lasts more than about 10 minutes, one of two things will happen every 5 minutes or so.

  1. The sound will cut off. that is, the sound icon (speaker) will revert to Sound Off (/ through speaker). The video continues in silent mode and I have to click on the Sound Icon to restart the sound.
  2. Sometimes, the video will stop along with the sound and I have to restart the video and sound.

When I switch to Firefox, sound and video continue until I stop them.

Are you running any anti - virus programs? Using a VPN?

Try setting up another admin user account in System Preferences/Users & Groups to see if the same problem continues. Please post back on whether or not this worked. Also try the Safe Mode. Please post back on whether or not this worked.

Safe Mode - About

If it works in the Safe Mode, try running this program when booted normally and then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor.  Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown. If the log won’t post, try posting it in Pastebin and provide a link in a reply. After pasting the report in a PasteBin page, go to the top of the page, and copy the address in the URL bar. Paste that in a new reply.        Pastebin

  1. I am not running any VPNs.
  2. I went through the Etrecheck routine several weeks ago for a separate Safari problem - "Bug in Safari" - Home button gives "can't open window" error. Two clicks and it opens.

Here is the report.

Etrechec report

It found Bitdefender which I deleted.

  1. I just now started up in a new admin account in Safe mode. (Note: the Numbers List defeats efforts to space numbered items apart.)

  1. I opened Safari and got the same Home button error mentioned above

  1. I went to ABC and tried to start a news video. The video would not start, the image blinked on and off at about 2 Hz.

Check System Preferences/Profiles and delete any you don't recognize.

You have a lot of 3rd party software running in the background. Try going to System Preferences/Users & Groups and remove all the log in items from your account. Restart the computer and do not open any programs but Safari. Test.
