Airpod crashes iphone 7

Every time I try to connect airpods to the iphone 7, it crashes the phone. The phone goes back out to the lock screen, and the home button and everything on the screen don't work. I have disconnected and reset the airpods multiple times. They are brand new.

How do I get them to work and not crash the phone?
