Apple Forcing Me to Use iCloud

I am a long time user of Apple products (I'm all-in). So I do not understand why Apple is forcing me use iCloud. All I want to do is use my iPhone and my iMac and share data between the two. I believe it is safer for me to have my data on my devices - not on some server somewhere. I don't want it and don't need it. If this sounds like a complaint - it is.

Thanks for the quick response. I guess what I am saying is that syncing with iTunes does not meet my needs. Also, I do not need real-time syncing. I just want to see, and back up, everything from my iPhone on my iMac. And, as a side issue, I don't want my data splashed all over the Internet for it to be used/abused. Privacy is very important to me. Although Apple is good at what they do (if I didn't think so then I wouldn't have purchased so many of their products) I believe my data is safer on my system than on a 'server in the sky' somewhere. After all, even the DoD has been successfully hacked. Maybe I'm wrong but, like I said, I covet my privacy. Thanks again for the response. I believe you have answered my question.
