Ipod nano 7th generation headphone jack problem

So I have the Ipod nano 7th gen. Its not new and is out of warranty. The problem I noticed was that it would play in the vehicle via the auxiliary cable and then stop playing after a few seconds where I would have to tap the play button again only for it to do the same thing. At the time it could still work with headphones, connect to the pc via itunes and play all the songs I placed on it. Since I couldnt use it in the vehicle and had no earphones of my own I would play it occasionally on the pc to keep it charged and running. I finally went today to get new aux cables but they would not work at all. The lady at the store even tried playing my ipod on their bluetooth system with the new cables, no luck . I went back home and tested them again with my son's headphones that it previously worked with, no luck, so its stopped working with headphones as well. It sounds like the headphone jack just conked out? Why would that just happen even though I was not even plugging anything in the jack often? I dont even think we have an apply repair store where I live. Please help

Thanks for replying zmclearan. It's the only device I have that I can connect in the car. To update I found a webpage online that advised to clean the aux port in the ipod by removing the cotton end of a cotton bud dipping it in a little rubbing alcohol and cleaning the inside of the port. I actually got it to work, that is I started getting audio on one side of the headphones. With a little more cleaning both sides worked. Only thing is, after a while I have to clean it again to get it to work again and if i turn or jiggle the headphone jack, i would either lose audio on one side or both and there's a sound of crackling. Same thing for when I connect it to the aux in the car. So I'm wondering if its really dirt, or the connection inside of the ipod port thats going. What do you think?
