All of a sudden my iPhone will only zoom by tapping or using the 1x /2x button.
when I try to pinch zoom it comes up with multiple boxes to change the color shades of the camera.
Did a hard reset of the phone with no luck. Has anyone experienced this?

You'll find great general troubleshooting steps to follow for camera issues below.
Are you using the default Camera app, or a different app?
If you're using a different app, let's test for the same behavior using the default Camera.
Have you tested for the same issue while opening the Camera app from the lock screen, as well as the Home screen?
I'd also be sure to check for updates to iOS.
