Driver not installing for ipad on my Windows 10 Laptop

When I plug my ipad into my laptop, it is reconized, but the driver is not installed. The error in Itunes is "iTunes is waiting for Windows Update to install the driver for this iPad. You may need to use the Windows Settings app to check for an update. I did that and Windows update says everything is up to date. I have installed the devices in device manager and reattached the iPad to invoke a reinstall, even did that with a restart in the middle to no avail. This is frustrating!

Has anyone else run into this? How did you get the driver to install?
