The iPad could not be synced because the connection to the iPad was lost.

I'm getting this message part way through a sync between my iMac and my iPad. Sync used to work with iTunes, but Catalina's Finder-based sync doesn't look as if it ever starts.

1 iMac 2017 running Catalina 10.15.2 (lastest as of this post)

2 iPad Air 3 running iOS 13.3 (also latest)

3 connected by Lightning cable to one on the iMac's USB ports, and charging

4 iPad open and unlocked

5 select the iPad in a Finder window; Finder shows memory and charging status correctly

6 clicking Files shows expected apps and their files

7 click Sync; finder shows spinning arrows status for awhile; then gives this error message

It seems that nothing happens, i.e., the sync never starts.

I tried resetting iPad trust/privacy. The iPad then asked whether to trust the Mac again. Granting permission let Finder see the iPad again, but the problem remained.

BTW, my iPhone appears to sync, but just as the sync finishes, gives the message,:The iPhone ... cannot be synced. An unknown error occurred (-50). This problem also started with Catalina AFAIK.

Ideas?

Yes, that's what I'm doing. It's a simple interface.

The iPad error doesn't given an error code, just the message in the topic line. I only mentioned the iPhone problem as evidence that Catalina causes the problem. Apple's list of error codes doesn't include 50 (-50), the iPhone error. So no help there.

When I plug in the iPad (Et tribus, Rob?), then hit sync, the system log shows these messages that are apparently all related to the iPad:

Any insight from that? What does "hotspot info" refer to? The hotspot on my iPhone that I sometimes connect the iPad to? Just for fun, I turned on the hotspot on the phone. Unsurprisingly, that didn't fix the problem. The log is a little different, though:

The iPad itself is Wi-fi only, so of course it has no hotspot of its own.
