Mac Won't update from App Store

Mac has stopped updating from App Store. I can download from websites but updates don't work. For updates of apps,I get the endlessly turning "busy"circle thing. For system updates, like for security, I get the beachball. Nothing happens. There's 40%of HDD available. Disc Utility repair shows an error, node value.....invalid parent id. Snapshot 1-7 not valid. Restore to previous.

Some strange things have been happening too. Like grayed out menus in iTunes. Latency, can't keep up with keystrokes then it is ok, then not. I forgot to add: This has happened since I unthinkingly turned on two factor ID then turned it off and attempted to turn off the notifications that urged me to complete two factor ID every time I open the computer. I had trouble the last time I tried to use 2FID and should have known better. oy vay!

If Disk Utility cannot repair the volume, then that could be your problem. If the drive is using the APFS file system, then see if you can delete the APFS snapshots since it appears one of them may be damaged.

Then run Disk Utility First Aid again.

If Disk Utility runs clean, then run EtreCheck and post the report here using the "Additional Text" which looks like a piece of paper. If Disk Utility cannot fix the file system, then you should make sure your system backup is current before erasing the whole physical drive and reinstalling macOS or restoring from backup.

Thank you so much! Mysteriously, the aggravating problem seems to have fixed itself. I did shut the iMac down for several minutes, tried to boot from external cd several times unsuccesfully and tried to use TechToolPro, failed at that. Meanwhile the updates are working again! Menus in iTunes no longer grayed out! latency is less! Who knows why?

I will try your advise anyway to see if it helps. Thank you again!!
