When I put the phone close to the new Apple Watch, the usual process begins to pair the watch to the phone.
But then it will say i need to update my iPhone to the latest software... But it is!!
please help me!

A new apple watch 3 or 5 will NOT pair with an iphone 6 or lower,apple watch 3 and 5 have software version watchos6 on them,this requires an iphone with ios13 or higher on them.Iphones with ios13 are an iphone 6s, or higher.Iphone 6 can only update to ios12 maximum.

Not sure what you mean about ok in the future.Your only options now are to return the watch for a refund or buy a phone that has ios13 or higher on it,which is an iphone 6s or higher.
