HEVC takes 10x more time to export than H264

I have a 13-inch, 2018, Four Thunderbolt 3 Ports MacBook Pro. For me, in compressor, keeping all other settings the same, it takes about ten times longer to export using HEVC versus H264. Is that normal ?

Edit : 8bit HEVC

Oh wow yes, so I tested again on two clips. The encoder type setting makes all the difference in time to export.

Here are the results for one of the clips.

3min29sec clip 1280x720p :

  • H264 takes 1min22sec
  • HEVC encoder type fast takes 33sec
  • HEVC encoder type slow takes 11minutes

H264 file size is 30% smaller than HEVC fast, though. Quality seems about the same from the two clips.

HEVC slow file size is exactly the same as H264, but quality is very noticeably better.

So.... in the end... I know which setting I want to use (HEVC with slow encoder type for better quality at smaller file size), but I know it takes forever (20x longer than HEVC slow)... 😅

No, it's not a preset anymore. I used the Youtube 4K as a base for H264, but then changed some things.

And then, from this H264 preset I juste made a copy and changed only H264 to HEVC without changing anything else. But this defaults to 8 bit HEVC with slow encoder type as described above.

EDIT : added clear answer - no, but...

HEVC takes 10x more time to export than H264
