Loose hinge on new MBP 16"

I just bought a new MacBook Pro 16" and the hinge feels much looser than my 2014 13" model. Specifically, I can leave the 16" about 2" open and it flops shut by itself. The old 13" did not shut by itself even when left 1 cm open.

Is this normal? If not, can I take this to the Apple Store in town (Basel, Swiizerland) to get fixed, even though I bought it from a different retailer? And will it wipe the hard disk to fix it, or is it just a cosmetic fix?

Many thanks.

Hi legatrix,

Thank you for using the Apple Support Communities! I understand you have a concern related to the lid on your new MacBook Pro 16".

The best option would be to take your MacBook Pro to an Apple Store Store List - Apple Store - Apple, or Apple Authorized Service Provider Apple - Find Locations - Location Selector. Even though you may not have purchased it from your local Apple Store, they should still be able to evaluate and inspect your MacBook Pro to help determine the cause, and whether or not it is it is expected. If you have important information on your Mac, it's always recommended to keep your data backed up: How to back up your Mac - Official Apple Support. The technician will discuss next steps to take after an evaluation as well.

Best regards.
