MacBook Pro display at very low brightness which cannot be adjusted

Sometimes after the lid of my MacBook Pro (2019, 16") was closed the display has very low brightness. The brightness cannot be increased with the brightness slider or via system preferences.

What does set the brightness back to normal levels is to click and unclick "Invert colours" in Systems Preferences -> Accessibility -> Display.

Any ideas on how to prevent the brightness going down in the first place?

Thanks.

Unfortunately this didn't solve the problem.

Now, the display actually got white, like bleached, after reopening the lid. I have observed this behaviour before; didn't mentioned it in my original questions as it occurred more rarely than the low brightness described above.

Again after clicking and unclicking "Invert Colours" in Systems Preferences -> Accessibility -> Display the display went back to normal colours. However, this time I had to do switch on/off "Invert Colours" multiple times.
