Check out the troubleshooting steps in the "If you need help sending or receiving mail on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch" section of the following support article: Get help using iCloud Mail - Apple Support
"If you need help sending or receiving mail on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
If you still can't send or receive mail, turn off each of the settings in steps 3, 4, and 5 above, then turn them back on."

Thank your interest. I had already tried the steps you have outlined but unfortunately they did not solve the issue that I was having. The issue seemed to clear again yesterday evening when I started receiving historic emails in my iCloud account. Thanks again
