Can I update my MacBook Pro 15" Mid 2011 past OS 12.2.6 Sierra ? Many new applications do not support prior to version 13

Back up your data, check your applications for compatibility, and download High Sierra.

Niel's right - High Sierra is as far as you can go. I don't recall having any compatibility issues with programs that ran in Sierra but it is always good to double check. Right now High Sierra is mostly supported by 3rd party vendors but that's begun to change.
