How long does Apple provide updates to IPad?

Hi, I'm going to get a new iPad now and is considering to buy a iPad 9,7 (2018), but am wondering for how long Apple will deliver updates on the iPadOS for the 2018 version versus the 2019 version?

(I still have a iPad 1.gen that has better battery than the ipad Air 3 that we have. The problem was that the OS was not updated for this iPad leaving it with only the old applications and buggy after a while. )

It isn't possible to say what will happen in the future but:

the 5th generation iPad which was released in March 2017 can still be updated to the current OS; the 4th generation released in 2012 cannot.

the iPad Mini 4th generation released in Sept 2015 can still be; the Mini 3rd gen released in Oct 2014 cannot.

the iPad Air 2nd gen released in Oct 2014 can still be; the original iPad Air released in Nov 2013 cannot.

All models of the iPad Pro can still be; the original was released in Nov 2015.

Those are pretty much new devices. Expect support for 5 years, if not longer. But no one really knows what Apple is doing, and for how long these devices will be supported. The oldest iPad that is currently still being supported is the iPad Air 2 from late 2014, so i think you are good.
