iPhone doesn't show up on my iMac's iTunes

I can't sync my IphoneXS because iTunes isn't recognizing it. Any suggestions?

I use iTunes to store and play music from my phone. I buy CD's from musicians and upload to iTunes on my iMac. That's what I want to listen to, not Apple's choices.

Is it because I don't subscribe to Apple Music, or am I doing something wrong? My iPhone is connected to my iMac by USB cable.
