No, you have to be nearby.
Apple says...Make sure that the person you're sending to is nearby and within Bluetooth and Wi-Fi range. Both devices are within 30 feet (9 meters) of each other and have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth turned on.

Sorry so long in responding. No, the person I airdropped to was at Hilton Head SC and I was in northern Virginia. Anyway she got it almost immediately.
I had just finished a Tai Chi class and my instructor is the one who said she had successfully airdropped to others not close by so I tried right then sending a video I had just taken of a Tai Chi procedure. Maybe it was due to all that Chi energy—lol.
Kind of like the building on the DMZ between the two Koreas. One sits on one side of the table, the second on the other and then they can AirDrop from two countries! ;)
I was able to Airdrop a video to a friend in another state last week, so even though it says "nearby" it did work for that transfer. However, I tried today to send a picture to a distant friend and could not get that to work.

I find that difficult to believe. Are you sure you did not send it via iMessage?
Sorry I am so late in responding. I definitely choose AirDrop. Would it have changed to iMessage on its own? I’m not familiar with iMessage. If on share And I choose message it attaches to a text message, is that the same as iMessage?
it definitely didn’t do that.
I really don't know Tailor65 weirder things have happened...I had a special icon on my menu bar and it allowed me to switch from Facetime phone calls to Facetime Video I got it right after Updating my Mac OS, a popup came up asking if I wanted to enable it so I did.
At that time I was unsure how to remove it so I asked here, no-one believed me until I sent a screen shot. I never removed it cause you can remove icons from the menu bar and go into the files and put them back but when I checked the files that one was not there.
The next Update it disappeared, I think it was something Apple was going to add and changed their mind but did not block it properly, was I the only one among millions who got it, I say yes.
I tell you all this to say I believe you may have that ability for some reason but why ?
Do you both live on the state line near each other????????????
😂🤣LOL Good One ChrisJ4203
