Photos not Importing Metadata

I have been using Photos since it replaced iPhoto.

When I edit my photos in Photoshop, I add a "Document Title" and other info to each image, which ends up in the images MetaData.

I create an album in Photos, then drag the folder of images from the finder into that album to import the images.

In the past when I imported these images, when I looked at the albums contents, the images would show the "document title" under each image.

But recently, this no longer happens.

Now after I import the photos, the album shows the Filename under the images.

I thought I forgot to add the metadata in photoshop, but when I reopen the images, the data is there.

Why is it no longer displaying the data properly after import?

Try editing the images with Photoshop from inside the library with this menu in the Edit mode:

and next

Photoshop won't be in the menu originally so you'll have to scroll down to the bottom and select other. Then navigate to your Photoshop app and select it. When you save be sure to save as the same format as the original. If you edit a jpeg and end up with layers and a .psd extension Photos won't know that you've edited it.

PASS shows an image in photoshop with TITLE metadata.

The imported image in PHOTOS shows the correct Title in image "INFO", and the correct Titles in the slide view.

FAIL shows an image in photoshop with TITLE metadata.

However the imported image in Photos shows blank Title in image "Info", and displays filenames in the slide view.

The import process (identical to the PASS process) did not extract the metadata from the images.

Photoshop is now subscription based instead of purchase base, so new versions come out almost monthly.

All photos are JPG.

All photos were created in same way...

Take photos on digital compact camera,

copy images from camera to a MacBook folder,

edit all images in photoshop to add metadata,

then save as JPG.

Only after the process is complete, are the images imported from the MacBook folder into the Photos app.

I recently did another batch of photos.

All photos were edited, and all had metadata TITLE added.

The entire folder / batch of photos was then imported into Photos at the same time.

See attached.

Roughly half of the images were imported correctly, and the metadata TITLE shows in the slide view.

However the other half of the images were imported incorrectly, ignored the metadata, and the FILENAME shows in the slide view.

This seems like positive proof of a bug to me.

I recently imported 2 batches of photos.

Both batches had their metadata edited in an identical manner.

The first batch displayed the metadata title correctly in the Album in Photos.

The second batch did not.

Seems like a bug that needs fixing to me.

How can the bug be reported? This was functioning properly in previous OS versions.

1 - how was the metadata edited, i.e what app and how was the file saved before importing?

2 - how were the two batches imported?

Metadata edit and file import has been done the same way ever since Photos replaced iPhoto.

In Photoshop:

Open JPG

File > File Info

Basic > Document Title (enter text) > OK

Save JPG

In Finder:

Group a batch of edited photos into Directory A

Group another batch of edited photos into Directory B

In Photos:

Create Album A.

Create Album B.

Drag Directory A from Finder onto Album A in Photos

Drag Directory B from Finder onto Album B in Photos

When viewing Album A, it shows Metadata "Document Title" under each slide.

When viewing Album B, it instead shows the filename under each slide.

What has changed in Photoshop? Are you using the same Photoshop version as before? What is the file format of the photos? Are both JPEGs? And have the JPEGS been created in the same way?

Photos 5 on Catalina seems to be scanned photos differently from photos taken with a digital camera. When I import photos created by a scanner, I am seeing less metadata than for photos taken with a camera.

That is an elaborate test and a surprising result. Did you do this test in a new Photos Library? Or have the photos been imported previously without added metadata and not yet deleted completely from the library?

When we import the same photo twice, first without some metadata tags, then again with the added metadata, Photos will just use the old original image file without the metadata. The two imported versions will share the original file, and the metadata will still be missing. When I try to test an issue with metadata, I am always testing in a new, empty library, to ensure, that no old original of the same file is present.

What happens, when you export one of the originals with "File > Export > Export unmodified original"? Are the metadata fields, that you added, still embedded in the exported original?
