Thanks for clarifying that. Ok, then what you are seeing makes sense. It could be possible that the downloading of OS X or macOS from the Apple servers could take a long time and would be dependent on both your Internet download speed and if your notebook is using a wired or wireless connection to the Internet.


Is there a reason that you are trying to reinstall OS X or macOS if this notebook was working when you bought it from your friend?

Did you get this "new" MacBook directly from Apple or did you purchase it from another third-party source? A new notebook from Apple would go through the initial setup process and not present you with a Recovery Mode screen displaying OS X Utilities. In addition, the newer MacBooks would display a macOS Utilities screen instead.

Unless the notebook does not boot up to the OS X Desktop, then there shouldn't be any reason to re-install the operating system ... but, of course, that is your call.


In most cases, you should be able to download OS X within an hour, but again, it depends on how the notebook is connected to the network and the download speed provided you by your ISP. Anything over 2hrs would seem unusual.
