Preparing to travel, will be away from the iMac for a while and would like to take my user files along on the MacBook Pro. Ideally, the MBPro would duplicate the user files so everything would be available on the road.

What does "sync" mean to you exactly?

Macs do not actually "sync" to each other. They sync to iOS or iPadOS devices.

But you may share some data via iCloud.
