Some of which is sketchy anti-malware too, yes. How much of that malware can be identified as such, when the user intentionally installed the coupon app or the VPN client app or... Personally in 30+ years of Mac use I've never installed malware. I look at Malwarebytes as a relatively effective tool to remove malware for those unfortunates that managed to install junk they shouldn't have.

If you mean an alternative, none that I would use.
Apple has built-in anti-malware for macOS.
