Airport Express won't reset....

If I am pressing the reset button while I power it up, the amber light will flash, but as soon as I stop pressing, it goes solid and does not seem to progress. If I press the reset while the unit is powered, it will not flash amber at all.

I can press while I power up, and press for two minutes and the unit will flash the entire time, but it stops flashing as soon as I stop pressing and airport utility still does not recognize it.

Are there any alternative ways to reset, or is the unit just broken?

THANKS

If the AirPort Express is not defective and you perform a factory default reset on the device........the amber light will blink rapidly for 5-6 seconds until you release the reset button. Then, it will be solid amber for 15-20 seconds or so, then turn to slow blinking amber about once a second.

If the light stays solid amber, the AirPort Express cannot get out of startup mode because there is a problem with the electronics of the device, likely the power supply.

Not sure how old the Express might be, but if it is 4-5 years old, that is about the average useful life of the product.

I doubt that it will help, but you could try a Hard Reset a few times as a last resort.

Power up the Express and let it run a minute or two

Hold in the reset button for 7-8 seconds and release

Allow a minute for the AirPort Express to restart to a slow, blinking amber light status about once a second

I am in awe if you got 7+ years of use from the AirPort Express. I never got more than 4-5 from any of my devices.

AirPorts are still available as new, re-furbished or used products from sites like eBay.com if you want to stay with an Apple product.

Unless you need AirPlay, I would go with an AirPort Extreme since it is a far superior product to an AirPort Express in terms of speed and WiFi signal power. Would be great if you can use Ethernet or powerline rather than rely on a much slower Wi-Fi connection between AirPorts.

For example, you will always lose at least half of the potential speed on the network when you try to extend it using only a wireless connection.

Thanks lapastenague. its an a1392, could be 7-9 years old. don't know if there are substitutes, I have a railroad style apartment, with stairs and elevators in the middle, so hard to get signal to far end. Maybe go to full ethernet over power line, rather than filling in spots with this extender.

And thanks Bob, but hard reset didn't work either. Things don't last forever. Just hope I can use the rest of my apple networking equipment rather than going over to a completely new mesh network, which I think would still have problems doing video on the far side of the apartment.
