My messages icon suddenly disappeared; why and how can it be reinstalled? I use it frequently

The messages app can't be deleted from the phone, but it can be restricted, in which case it will disappear from the screen.
Did you make sure, that all restrictions are disabled on your phone in the settings for Screen Time?
