PAYG data usage on iphone (SE)

I've never had a smart phone before.

I'm on pay as you go but I'm terrified to have the iphone on to use as a phone in case apps and things that are automatically on the phone are using up my credit as data without me asking them to.

Does this happen?

Can I somehow turn off that bit? (On my computer if I'm worried I just turn off wi-fi but I don't know if you can with a phone and if the phone would still work for calls in and out and texts). If I can, how do I do that?

I also just joined i-cloud and am now worried about that too using up my credit without me actively accessing it eg I have put photos up there and some word documents to store but maybe it would be better somehow to have them on the phone.

iPhone SE, iOS 13

Hello elisa1456,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities! I understand from the information you provided that you’re worried about apps using data on your iPhone; I'd like to help.

The following support article provides some information about how to see what's being used an even disable cellular data all together:

Hope this helps.

Best Regards.
