PAYG data usage on iphone (SE)

I've never had a smart phone before.

I'm on pay as you go but I'm terrified to have the iphone on to use as a phone in case apps and things that are automatically on the phone are using up my credit as data without me asking them to.

Does this happen?

Can I somehow turn off that bit? (On my computer if I'm worried I just turn off wi-fi but I don't know if you can with a phone and if the phone would still work for calls in and out and texts). If I can, how do I do that?

I also just joined i-cloud and am now worried about that too using up my credit without me actively accessing it eg I have put photos up there and some word documents to store but maybe it would be better somehow to have them on the phone.

Thanks for getting back to us. If you have iCloud Photos enabled, this will upload your photos to iCloud for safe keeping. Keep in mind if you have cellular data disabled, this will only happen while connected to Wi-Fi.

Excellent thank you. I'll go through the article with my phone later this week. A brief look suggests it will be very helpful.

Someone suggested that as I have icloud, when I take photos they may automatically upload and use data. Is that the case?
