TimeMachine cannot backup

I have been backing up, using TimeMachine, to a Synology NAS box since purchasing my Macbook Pro in mid 2015. Recently, I have been receiving the message that TM needs to complete a first backup (even though it's been backing up for years). When trying to back up I then receive the error Time Machine could not delete the backup disk image “/Volumes/com.apple.TimeMachine.TimeMachine-XXXXXXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXXXXXXXXXX/XXXXXX MacBook Pro.sparsebundle”.

After some trouble I then deleted the sparsbundle and started again. It backed up once and then the whole thing started again with it also saying there are no backups.
