Can somebody enlighten how one can permanently ( !! ) set the sort order of the few widgets I am using in the "Today" sidebar ?
Each time I am boot my Mac ( or Macbook ) the during the last usage session set order has disappeared.
One command-clicks and drags widgets into the preferred order. It is a compound action, and yes, that is reflected in the Today panel order. I haven't tested this yet on a reboot, but seems plausible it will stick.

I don't think you can.
In System Preferences : Extensions : Today, you can command-click and drag the widgets into your preferred order, and these will obey this new ordering in the Today panel.
Just to clarify, are you saying "command-click" will force the order to be remembered but just dragging them won't?
The reason I asked is because I don't have to use the command key to drag them.

You are correct. The first and only approach I took was using the command key with drag, and as you have pointed out, the command-key is unnecessary.
