Sim not supported

I have a iPhone 6 Plus from the US. I moved to Liberia and the iPhone can’t accept any sim. It reads sim not supported. What should I do? Do I need activation code?

The phone is locked to a previous cellular provider. Contact that cellular provider to determine if they will unlock it.
