Airpods only blink amber and won't pair

I was given new airpods yesterday and since they gave them to me as separate pieces they told me I would have to let them charge for an hour and that would cause them to sync up and work as one. After letting them charge and waiting they only blink amber when I open the case and won't pair no matter how long I hold the button on the back on the case. If I take the right one out I can get the left one to pair with my iphone, but as soon as I put the right one back in the case it starts blinking amber again. I've tried every troubleshooting option on the internet but still cannot get them to work.
