Also, not that I make anything for the recommendation, but there's are lots of posts here everyday from users who purchased online and the computer was either defective or the previous owner hadn't cleaned it properly for sale and they were still tied to his Apple ID. Best way is to know the owner and have hands on with the computer.

AppleCare is available to purchase within the first 60 days after purchasing NEW (or Apple refurbished, which are indistinguishable from new) and not otherwise. If you bought from a company, you can ask them about extended warranty from them.

Otherwise, inability to buy AppleCare insurance from Apple is already reflected in the [discounted] price you paid for the computer.
