My new Macbook Pro can't control audio volume on 2012 LED Cinema Display.

Here's a variant on an old issue. I have a 16" 2019 Macbook Pro connected to a 2012 LED Cinema display. Audio and video is connected fine (imagine the configuration of adaptors), and the USB hub on the Cinema display can drive a printer, so I know it's properly connected, but I cannot control the audio volume from a Magic Keyboard. The sound level feedback from Preferences pane shows the level increasing and decreasing with touches to the 3 keys meant to control volume (in agreement with the transitory on screen volume level feedback), but the actual audio output is max, or at least very loud. I watch the stated level decrease to zero, still max. The level controls work fine on the Macbook Pro's internal speakers. Any solutions to this?

OK. I came up with a simple solution to my own problem. In the Sound Preferences pane, Instead of selecting the device for audio output of LED Cinema Display using Type DisplayPort I selected Display Audio using Type USB. Now I can control the volume in the ordinary way. Same result, as you'd expect, from selecting Display Audio from the Sound menu in the menu bar. I hope this helps someone else.
