About this mac - Storage (multiple hard drives)

I have an issue with About this mac. I have a 27 inch 2019 5k iMac, 16GB Ram, Fusion Drive, 3.1 Ghz i5, 575X 4GB, running Catalina 10.15.2.

I have an externally connected 4TB Western Digital drive, connected by USB C.

I only use the fusion drive for apps and have 948GB of 1.03 TB free, so I've only used about 50GB on this drive.

On my second external drive I have my user folder and have 2.53 TB of 4TB free. Disk health on both is excellent with DriveDX.

When I open "About this mac" I notice a slow down. When I open activity monitor under Memory it shows the culprit as Books. I close the process Books (which does not appear as an open application in the dock) & leave activity monitor open but close about this mac. If I reopen "About this mac" and select storage, the process "Books" will open, but the app does not. This "books" process starts taking up ridiculous amounts of RAM.

When I look at "About this mac" it attributes way too much storage to the fusion drive, which only holds 50GB. My user information for TV (815.4GB) and Documents (125.67GB) etc which are physically held on the second drive are reflected as being on the Macintosh HD.

I'm not sure if they are related to my sluggish performance, but this feels slower than my 2010 i7 with SSD and 2TB HDD. Apps open slower (multiple bounces in the dock and videos on VLC stop playing (pause) while apps open, even when there are only minimal apps open.

Any help with this as to why it may be happening and what to do to resolve it would be great.

No, Books does not open on my system. Only System Information opens. I noticed in the process information that files were opening in /Volumes/Second HD/Users/xx/Library.../. I'm puzzled if this is your startup disk and what is this "xx" folder in the /Users/ folder? That is an unusual user account name.

Reboot the computer into Safe Mode and test if the same thing happens when you use About This Mac.

About Using Safe Mode

Then try the following:

Create a new admin user account, log out of this "xx" account and log into the new account. Now, does the same thing happen as you have previously reported?

If I open the process using Command=I i get this

The text window is filled with this -

Get Correct Storage Information

Do not use the information from the Storage section of the About This Mac dialog. Ignore the Storage information as it is typically wrong. To find out the correct information for any disk: Select a Desktop disk icon. Press Command-I to open the Get Info window and look at the topmost panel displayed. You will find the disk information displayed for Capacity, Available, and Used. If you have more than one disk/partition then repeat for each one on your Desktop.

The categories found in the Storage section of About This Mac is simply an arbitrary way of displaying files on your drive. There are no such categories actually on the drive.

There is no reason Books should open when you open Activity Monitor. I do not see that on my system. There is some reason why those two are launching together but you will have to search your computer to find what that is.

Thanks Kappy. I understand what you said about the Get Info about the individual drives and that does work & is accurate but I am perplexed about this.

Books app doesn't open, only the process. There is no dot under the app in the dock to indicate the app is open & finder says the last opened date was the 28th of January, despite the photo above showing it opening today.

When you looked at your mac, did you notice what process did open when the you went to storage on "About this mac" with activity monitor open. This may assist me in tracking down why I have this anomaly.

Thanks

Thanks Kappy I modified the user account name to post, it is not xx. It is my name, which I do not broadcast online. It would be fairly pointless to have a user name that is not your name and then broadcast your real name online.

Again I stress, Books does not open, just a process as described through the information above. I'll try it in safe mode.

Feb 2, 2020 12:52 PM in response to blackvulcan3

Still, I see no such process on my system when trying your instructions. I think you should create a new admin user account, and test if the same thing happens. This shouldn't take too long to try. Log out of your "xx" account and log into the new account we'll call "yy" for reference.

Be sure to test the new account as-is. Don't add or delete anything in this account.

Feb 3, 2020 12:48 AM in response to Kappy

So safe mode replicates the issue, but a new test account does not.

This appears to be something that is not OS related but related to my account. I may have to rebuild that, I'd like to understand more about why this process opens. From above I can't ascertain why? I can see where it points to and that folder is old shortcuts and very little information held in those folders. Just a loop of shortcuts that appear to go nowhere.

That is a macOS system process that runs when the Storage button on About This Mac is clicked. However, on my system no "books" process appears, so I have no idea what's happening on your system.

Something is running on your computer that is somewhere in your Home folder. My guess is a file that may be located in the /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/ folder. But I have no idea what it would be without looking to see what is in that folder. Another possible place would be in the /Home/Library/Containers/ folder which may have a bad file. There is a com.apple.iBooksX.DiskSpaceEfficiency folder in the Containers folder. You could try putting it in the Trash and restarting to see what happens. Usually, the folder gets recreated so the old one is replaced with a new one. If this fixes the problem, then Empty the Trash. Otherwise, move the old one back into the Containers folder.

Another place to look is in the /Home/Library/Caches/ folder for this folder: com.apple.iBooksX. If the above doesn't help then delete this folder. macOS will recreate it, too, so deleting it won't hurt anything.

This is about all that comes to mind right now. If I come across anything new I'll pass it along. If you have no success with the above suggestions, then consider just going with a newly created admin account. That seemed to fix the problem. The only new problem with this is how to get your files moved from the old account to the new one. For that, you need to see: Transferring files from one User Account to another.
