iMovie 10 not recognising date metadata of imported clips

Hi

I have started converting from using iMovie 9.0.9 to iMovie 10

I am running High Sierra , and if I upgrade my OS beyond that, iMovie 9.0.9 will cease to work - so I have to do this to progress my OS.

Here is the problem: The clips in iMovie 9.0.9 all have file names which include the date and time that the clip was recorded on the camera. iMovie 9.0.9 appears to use this data correctly when arranging the clips in the iMovie Event library listing.

When I look at these clip files in Finder, and display the "created" column, I can see that some of the files have created dates that do not match the metadata date of when the clip was actually shot. This is probably due to me copying the files around for back up purposes. So, for example, I have clips that were shot in August 2004 (and this date correctly shows in the file name) but the create date in finder shows as November 2010

As I say, in iMovie 9.0.9 this is not an issue, and iMovie 9 correctly uses the 2004 date to organise the clips

However, when these clips are converted to be used in the new imovie10, they are listed in the organiser as November 2010 clips. It seems to be using the Created date of the file, as opposed the metadata of when the clip was actually shot

This is a huge issue for me as I have over a thousand clips dating back to 2004, and if they are not organised correctly in iMovie 10 by the date they were shot, I am in trouble.

Does anyone have any smart ideas on this problem please

Many thanks

I don't know the answer to your question. Unless someone has any suggestions you might have to play around with it.

Carrying over metadata between apps can be tricky. Dates of clips can be internal to an app and not carry over into other apps. iMovie organizes imported clips by creation date (recording date) and the creation date can be manually changed within iMovie. If I transfer a 2009 creation date clip from Photos app to desktop and do a Get Info, the creation date is shown as 2020 -- the date it was "created" on the desktop. When I drag the same clip from my desktop to iMovie the creation date is shown as 2009 again. If I go to the Media Browser view and type in 2009 in the search box, my 2009 clip will show up. However, if the creation date had been changed by previous transfers, that would be problematic.

So, you might do a test with a few clips from 2004 that are showing 2010, by doing a Media Browser search for 2004 in iMovie and see what happens. It might be that you will display your 2004 clips.
