my father in law passed away and his wife gave us his old ipad 2, the email she gave us with the password isnt working and we cannot get it past the "i cloud activation login" screen. any advice?

Im not sure what our other options are. we mainly just want to use it so our daughter can watch bubble guppies in the car. can we send it into apple with the death certificate, would we really need all that just to restart the device?

Icloud being signed in is the major obstacle

If the original email address for the AppleID remains active - and is accessible to the original device owners Widow - you could reset the AppleID password. Once the password is reset, you can login to the AppleID account and disable the Activation Lock. Once the Activation Lock is disabled, you can erase and setup again as new.
