Trying to get proper phone number onto Apple account

So I recently switched carriers, and the temporary number that they gave me while my phone number transferred over is what is stuck on my apple account now.

If I send people an iMessage, the temp number shows up rather than my actual number. I tried adding in my actual number, and it just kept giving me an error of ‘this phone number is already in use with another account’, even though I’m in the proper Apple ID account.

I factory reset my old iPhone, didn’t use my Apple ID to set it up, went back in to try again to put my ACTUAL number and it still keeps coming up that my phone number is in use with another account.

How can I fix this?! I don’t even want to send iMessages at this point because now it’ll confuse people thinking it’s my new number, which it’s not.

Hi there, lcc1331.

I see that you're having a problem using your iPhone since you changed carriers and ported your phone number over to your new carrier. You were given a temporary number until they transferred your old number, but now you can't remove the temporary one. Good job on the troubleshooting you've tried, and I'm glad to help with this.

Add or remove your phone number in Messages or FaceTime -- Go to Settings > Messages > Send & Receive and check if you're signed in with your Apple ID. If you are, tap it and select "Sign Out", then restart your iPhone: Restart your iPhone

If you weren't currently signed into your Apple ID or once you're back to the Home screen, sign into Messages with your Apple ID which should automatically update your phone number.
