Backing up photos on iCloud

Hi, I want to back up my full photo library from my MacBook Air onto iCloud. Then I want to synch my iphone to iCloud so that all new photos I take are backed up as I take them. Will synching my iphone effect the backup of my Mac's photo library, or will it just add to it? TIA!

iPhone XS, iOS 13

All photos on the computer and phone will be combined into one library, available on both devices. The process is clever enough to not keep duplicates of any that are on both. Future additions, edits or deletions will be synced between both devices.

People often ask, "Won't this fill up my phone?" — it's a good question, and the answer is that the Optimize iPhone Storage feature can be used to ensure this doesn't happen.
