2010 Macbook pro question regarding EFI update

I have a mid 2010 MacBook pro 13. I am trying to upgrade my RAM from 4GB to 16GB. I don't have the latest EFI update. I have 68.0.0.0.0. I think I need 71.0. How do I get that update? I am running Sierra.

I also want to upgrade storage space from 256GB. What is the most I go to?

If you have a 68.0.0.0.0 firmware then you already have the newer style firmware which should be sufficient for using 16GB of RAM (2 x 8GB). The system firmware to support 16GB of RAM was included in Lion so you have much newer firmware. The only way to get the newer system firmware update is to run the macOS 10.13 High Sierra installer which includes a firmware updater.

If you are having memory problems, then make sure both memory modules are firmly inserted and latched in place on both sides. Sometimes the upper memory module nearest the keyboard can become unlatched when installing the lower memory module nearest the bottom case. Also the lower memory slot can sometimes become damaged over time from repeated pressure against the bottom case so try leaving that slot empty.

Macs are very picky about the memory they use. For best results it is recommended to purchase memory directly from Crucial or OWC making sure to use the tools on their respective websites to identify the exact part numbers which are guaranteed to be Mac compatible.
